PSHE Curriculum including Relationships and Health Education
At LEAP Federation Schools, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.
National Curriculum
The National Curriculum provides a structure and skills progression and knowledge for the PSHE curriculum taught throughout the school, which is linked to each unit of work, which reflects a balanced programme of study.

Curriculum overview
The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area. Jigsaw is a unique, spiral, progressive and effective scheme of work, aiming to prepare children/young people for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
The PDF overview of the programme can be found at the bottom of this page.
The programme also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.
Cultural Capital
The PSHE curriculum will help LEAP Federation pupils to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives.
It encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and choices and in achieving economic, physical and emotional wellbeing. The curriculum also provides opportunities for the children to reflect on, and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future. To develop resilience and to provide strategies to prepare them for adulthood.
Fundamental British Values
Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.
The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson).
Rich, Relevant and Representative: The LEAP Empowerment Curriculum
At LEAP we endeavour to ensure that every child has access to a rich, relevant and representative curriculum. Our PSHE curriculum provides ample opportunities to discuss sometimes difficult topics such as discrimination, representation, identity and respect and tolerance in a safe and positive environment.
PSHE at Home
At LEAP we actively encourage children to continue their learning at home. Jigsaw offer a parent/carer portal with access to original stories, activities and calm me times.
